Big Bern’s American Grill at Toa Payoh Will Be Closing Due To A Lack Of Staff
If you are a fan Big Bern’s American Grill, then you might be familiar with its owner — Mr Bernard Utchenik or Bernie for short. The American-turned-Singaporean, was also the brains behind Botak Jones, before he opted out of the partnership.
Currently, there are two Big Bern’s outlets but come this Sunday (15 Oct), there will only be one left. After facing a series of staffing issues, Big Bern’s sadly announced on its Facebook page that it will be closing its Toa Payoh outlet.
Trouble brewing in grill paradise
In a Facebook post on 29 Sept, the management of Big Bern’s announced that the outlet will be closing in October.
The eatery’s troubles began on 24 Sept when a cook called in sick and Bernie was not in a good physical state to take over.
TNP reported that Bernie most recently suffered from anxiety attacks in 2014. It reached a point that Bernie was even reluctant to leave his room. However, the F&B veteran motivates himself to get out bed by doing “something nice for somebody else”.
This mantra has not changed till today. Although his Toa Payoh outlet has been having staffing issues, Bernie tries to get the outlet ready for business to the best of his abilities. However, after suffering from a heart attack earlier this year (1 Feb), Bernie has not been in good enough condition to run things. Just take a look at how tired he is in his picture from today (13 Oct):
This has led to his inability to keep his Toa Payoh outlet opened regularly. Being the nice man that he is, Mr Bernie has apologized profusely to his customers on his Facebook page.
Unable to sustain the outlet by himself and embarrassed at the current standards, Bernie has decided that this Sunday (15 Oct) will be the last day of business for the Toa Payoh outlet.
Do head down to show your support if you are a fan of Big Bern’s.
However, if you are unable to head down during this weekend, fret not because you can visit them at their last outlet.
