Man pretends to be the brother of retired minister Wong Kan Seng

A businessman by the name of Wong Kok Keong went around claiming that he was former Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng’s brother.

The fake brother even allegedly resembled the minister. Businessman/conman Wong Kok Keong cheated his victims of S$420,000 over two months. He gained the trust of a construction firm’s bosses with the lie and got them to hand over a cheque for S$180,000 as partial payment for a plot of land on 27 September 2014.

A month later, he cheated the firm of another S$240,000. He had convinced the victims to buy 1.6 million shares at S$0.15 per share. In total, he almost got away with nearly half a million dollars.

When the victims asked for documents of proof of purchase of the land and shares, he could not produce them. Later, he told them that the investments were unsuccessful and promised to return the money.

Today (21 Mar), Wong pleaded guilty to cheating. If convicted, he could face jail time of up to seven years.

Looks like it was a case of Wong identity.
