Decathlon Megastore Opens In Kallang
Other brick-and-mortar stores are closing because customers are increasingly drawn towards online shopping.
But Decathlon stemmed the tide of closure yesterday (22 May) by announcing the opening of a new megastore at Kallang come Jan 2019.
For the uninitiated who don’t get the hype, this $4 bag might ring a bell.
Don’t expect to it to be any old store, though.
Entering the lab will be like stepping into the future, whereby shopping is both smart, affordable and fuss-free.
Free foot scans when you buy shoes
The 5,000 sq m Decathlon Singapore Lab will be at Stadium Boulevard.
And is set to harness Augmented Reality (AR) and virtual simulation technology to enhance customer experience.
For instance, patrons trying on a pair of shoes can get foot scans to better understand the make-up of their feet.
This will enable customers to buy shoes that are best suited to their type of feet.
Cheap sports goods
Decathlon, originally from France, has earned a special place in the heart of Singaporeans because of its diverse range of very cheap goods.
It’s the go-to store for almost all kinds of sporting goods, be it yoga foam block or camping gear.

And the best part is that the good quality items speak to the cheapo in every one of us.
For example, you could get a sturdy bag for under $4 at the store.
Shoes that could easily break a hole in your wallet come at a steal.
At about $25, they cost just about 2 pints of Ben & Jerry’s at a discount.
And those who want to try out a new sport but don’t know if they will ever excel at it need not invest a huge capital.
This $7.90 badminton racket speaks for itself.
Tie-up with SportSG
Further value-add will come in the form of cooperation with Sport Singapore (SportSG), our national sports agency.
The tie-up allows Decathlon and SportSG to encourage participation in sport via the an integrated facility.
This is because the megastore will host sports events and clinics in its free-to-play areas, and an Active Health Lab.
At the Active Health Lab, customers can be screened for free to identify certain health signals.

Keeping prices low
True to it’s word, Decathlon has kept sports cheap for Singaporeans.
When it opened it first store here just over 2 years ago, then-CEO of Decathlon Singapore, Mr Bastien Grandgeorge, said
Sports should not be expensive and Singaporeans should be able to access high-performance sports equipment and apparel at an accessible price point.
So, save the date.
