Learn How To Floss At ‘Flosstival’ Dental Health Roadshow Over The Weekend, Held By NTU Students

Floss For That Gloss

As you may know, a warm smile is the universal language of kindness. And nothing goes better with a warm smile than an immaculate set of pearly white teeth.

However, you can’t get good teeth if you don’t know how to floss — and believe it or not, there are people who don’t know how to do that.

With proper oral hygiene habits, you too can look just as charming as this:

Floss Forward

In an attempt to encourage youths to pick up flossing, a team of 4 final-year students from Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU’s) Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) has teamed up with Pearlie White to launch a dental health campaign called Floss Forward.

You can find them on Instagram here.

Just Gotta Floss

Through the campaign, the team hopes to influence young Singaporeans aged 18-24 to improve their oral hygiene and overall well-being.

The team also produced an amusing video with a catchy song called “Just Gotta Floss”:

Everybody, everybody put your floss up.

A week-long roadshow “Flosstival” is on now and will go on till this weekend at Great World City. At the event, visitors will be able to participate in hands-on activities to experience and learn about flossing from trained dental students, who will also be conducting live flossing demonstrations.

Date: Feb 20 to Feb 26

Time: 10am to 10pm

Location: Great World City, Basement 1, 1 Kim Seng Promenade, Singapore 237994

If you’re taking public transport, you can hop onto the free shuttle buses at Orchard MRT, Chinatown MRT and Redhill MRT that will bring you to the mall. The shuttle bus timings can be found here.

Health Benefits

Apparently there have been long-standing debates regarding the effectiveness of flossing, with reports stating that it doesn’t prevent gum diseases, causing the public to believe flossing is unnecessary.

However, dental experts from Singapore believe flossing is pivotal in ensuring good oral hygiene.

A Floss Forward survey showed that among 300 Singaporeans aged 18-64, those aged 18-24 flossed the least, while a report by AsiaOne revealed that only 36% of Singaporeans have a habit of flossing.

Here’s why you should floss regularly, according to Floss Forward:

1. Flossing cleans the remaining 40% of the teeth surface that brushing alone cannot reach.

2. Not flossing can lead to a buildup of bacteria and plaque in the mouth that can in turn lead to tooth decay and gum issues.

3. Flossing can enhance an individual’s overall well-being by reducing the risk of heart disease, mouth cancer, diabetes and kidney failure.
