Former Gangster Sends Mother’s Day Message

With Mother’s Day is coming this weekend, and as with any special occasion, our Facebook feeds are laced with heartwarming messages and tributes, this time to the iron ladies behind all our successes.

While many of these are thinly disguised advertisements by companies trying to cash in on the day with promotions, one particular video released on Wednesday (May 10) has stood out for melting the hearts of Singaporeans.

Gangster’s Tribute

In the 4-minute video tribute posted by Honour Singapore, which describes itself as a “non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting a culture of Honour and Honouring”, reformed former gang member Cevin Leong talked about how his mother had been there for him despite the many lows of his life.

You can catch the video titled “Ah Leong’s Confession” here:

Wayward Youth

The video starts with Mr Leong recounting his rebellious teenage years, where he was kicked out of school and pushed into the life of a gangster. Instead of listening to his mother’s constant advice for him to get his life back on track, he took solace in hanging out with his new “friends”.

However, being a gang member wasn’t all it cracked up to be. Mr Leong recounted how one encounter in a club resulted in him being sent to jail.

Despite all his missteps, his mother remained steadfast in her love for him. She regularly bailed him out of the police station and even visited him in jail.

Turning Point

The turning point came when Mr Leong finally realised the toll his actions had taken on his mother. As she’s getting older, she had lamented to him about her lack of energy to “follow him around” much longer.

He then turned his life around, and claims to be “free and disciplined” for the past 4 years, working odd jobs and making an honest living for himself.

Thank You, Mum

Near the end of the clip, he recognised his mother’s support: “Because of me, you became old.”

Now, he just wants to make her happy by being a better person.

Many netizens encouraged him to continue living his new life and told him that it was never too late to change.

Ah Leong’s Story

This video comes hot on the heels of another posted last week by Honour Singapore that talked about Mr Leong’s life story as a gangster in Singapore.

It showed how hard it was for an ex-convict to bounce back in life.

The story shed light on how perilous the life of a mob boss is, and reminds us that most of the time, we fail to see how our actions are affecting the lives of our loved ones.

Thankfully, Mr Leong has seen the error of his ways and is making an honest change to his life.

Meet Ah Leong

By the way, if you have been touched by his story, and want know more, you can try to meet “Ah Leong” face to face.

One netizen actually pointed out that he may be working at a bak kut teh stall at Jalan Kayu:
