[UPDATE: 1 April] Hailo clarified in a Facebook post that the Hailo navigator programme was an April Fool’s joke. Hailo sure had us fooled!

Calling for students – earn some extra bucks by telling the taxi uncle how to drive

Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ve most probably heard of popular taxi apps like GrabTaxi, Easy Taxi, and Uber.

Ever heard of Hailo? Like GrabTaxi, the app offers a similar cab-booking service. According to Hailo, it is an “easy-to-use app, passengers get a taxi or licensed car in two quick taps, while drivers earn more money more efficiently”. Apparently, this efficiency is taken very seriously, with an unprecedented value-added service provided in every cab – a Hailo navigator.

Hello? Hailo… what?

So what’s a Hailo navigator? Hailo posted on Facebook on Monday (30 March):

To improve our service, today we have introduced a new Hailo Navigator program. 60 of our navigators will now be attached to our drivers to help them get to their pick-up location faster and also ensure that our drivers take the shortest (cheapest) route for our passengers.

Over the last few months, we have received feedback from some passengers that drivers arrived 2-3 mins late to pick them up. Based on our data, we know that 87% of our drivers arrived before the ETA (estimated time of arrival). For those that were late, not being able to find the pick-up location is the number one complaint. We hope that with this new Hailo Navigator program, we will make life easier for our drivers.

So look out for our navigators and don’t be surprise when you see them riding with you.

Here are some of the Hailo navigators you may meet during your Hailo experience:

Yup, most of them look like students seeking a part-time job. Maybe some netizens aren’t receptive to having such young faces navigate their rides.

Thus, we sieve out some concerns netizens may have about this special service:

1. The navigators know how to drive or not?

Answer: Don’t know how to drive never mind, got two days of Google maps training.

2. What happens if you have 4 passengers?

Besides getting free navigation service, you get to check out xiao mei meis too.

Hailo… a gimmick?

Do we really need to have an extra person in the taxi? After all, taxi drivers have been navigating around on their own for ages without any problems. If there was a need for better navigation among drivers, why not just train them instead?

Or, pay me to navigate my ride and give me discount on my cab fare lah.
