Joseph Schooling wins historic bronze medal at FINA World Aquatics Championships

On Saturday night (8 August), Joseph Schooling clinched a bronze medal for 100m butterfly final at the FINA World Championships, setting a new Asian record and smashing the existing national record.

He became Singapore’s first athlete to win a medal at the FINA World Aquatics Championships.


Schooling also managed to finish within the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) for three events at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

2014 Commonwealth Games

Joseph Schooling was the first Singaporean to clinch a medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He won a silver in the 100m butterfly, setting a new national record of 51.69 seconds.


2014 Asian Games

2 months later, Joseph Schooling competed in Incheon Asian Games. He won a bronze medal for 200m butterfly event, breaking Singapore’s 24-year duck in the category.


Later on, he clinched a silver medal for 50m butterfly event adding to Singapore’s medal haul.


Schooling’s greatest victory came when he secured Singapore’s first gold medal at the Incheon Asian Games in the 100m butterfly category. He set a new games record and it was Singapore’s first Asian Games gold win in swimming since 1982.

2015 SEA Games

The Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2015 was held in Singapore and Joseph Schooling took part in 9 categories.

He crushed a 33-year national and games record of 22.69 seconds when he clocked in a time of 22.47 seconds in the 50m freestyle.


And he broke another games record for 100m butterfly event.


And another one.


In total, Schooling sealed a total of 9 gold medals and broke 9 Games records.


2016 Summer Olympics

Joseph Schooling has performed, winning medals in 4 events over the past 2 years. Being able to clinch a bronze medal for FINA World Championships proves that he can match the big boys in the international arena.
