Kindergarten kids bow in front of Lee Kuan Yew’s banner
In what looks like a trailer for a parody movie, a video of tiny kindergarten kids being made to bow three times in front of Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s banner has been making its rounds online. The video has been shared over 1,700 times (at time of writing) since it was uploaded on Monday (21 Mar).
Understandably, people want to pay their respects to a man worth remembering, especially now that we are a day away from the first anniversary of his death. But the kids probably have no idea what they were doing bowing in front of Ah Kong. This video verges on posthumous worshipping and has drawn its fair share of critics.
Sometimes it feels like we are hearing more of Mr Lee Kuan Yew since his death than the time he was alive. With the first anniversary of his death approaching, there is no harm in Singaporeans honouring Mr Lee for his contributions to Singapore. However, we should not be turning him into a cult figure.
