“There are always friends to lend a hand, Marine Parade’s the best in the land”

There are many things we don’t know about Singapore.

For example, did you know that Singapore’s land size is expected to increase to 655 square kilometers by the year 2030, compared to a measly 581.5 square kilometers in the 1960s?

You also probably didn’t know that Singapore’s South East area of Marine Parade has a theme song.

When Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong arrived at his ward, residents broke into the Marine Parade Song to welcome him.

ESM Goh tried to clap along, but could only muster 2 claps before giving up.

Those excited aunties singing their hearts out just got to us.

But the song is so top secret, even residents of Marine Parade don’t seem to know of its existence.

That song is older than you think

Our Lovely Marine Parade is the name of the song, and it’s probably a lot older than you think.

We did some digging, and discovered the song was first released as a 5-song cassette tape. You read that right. Cassette tape.

There’s no information on when the tape was released, but the last time cassette tapes were a thing was back in the 90s — so we’re going to hazard a guess, and suggest that tape was released in the late 80s.

The tape was produced by Singaporean father and son duo, Mel and Dennis Ferdinands.

In case you’re wondering, here’s the lyrics of Our Lovely Marine Parade:

Marine Parade is the place to be,
With sandy beaches and the swaying trees.
There’s no where else I’d rather be,
In Marine Parade with my family.

We live in peace and harmony,
One big happy family.
There are always friends to lend a hand,
Marine Parade’s the best in the land.

This special place we call our home,
With friendly neighbours we are never alone.
When called upon, we’ll do our part,
With a helping hand and a loving heart.

We live in peace and harmony,
One big happy family.
There are always friends to lend a hand
Marine Parade’s the best in the land,
Marine Parade’s the best in the land.

Best in the land indeed.
