Who’s the real King of Caldecott?
In reality, Zoe Tay is the undisputed queen of Caldecott. In the virtual world… maybe not so. Find out who’s the most popular local female artiste on Instagram here.
Likewise for the male artistes, who wields the most influence in the online sphere? Who is the true king of MediaCorp?
Here are 15 male artistes ranked from the least popular to the most:
15. Jack Neo (@jackneock)
Number of followers: 22.6k
Neo might be the King of box office, but he’s definitely not one on Instagram. Guess people are more interested in his movies than his selfies. This probably comes as no surprise, considering his selfies aren’t very well taken.
Surely the director can do better? There’s just too much headroom and shooting from a low angle is always a no-no.
This one’s slightly better, but a bit scary. He looks like he’s gonna slaughter the pigs any moment and make bak kut teh.
We approve of this photo though! #likeaboss
14. Qi Yuwu (@qiyuwu)
Number of followers: 27.9k
Qi only has 27.9k followers on Instagram, a far cry from his wife Joanne Peh who has a following of 104k. Why the difference? After all, he attentively helped Peh up the stage to receive her award and was even seen massaging his pregnant wife’s feet after the Star Awards.
Maybe it’s because he posts photos like this…
Or blurry photos like this…
Maybe he should post more photos as such:
We like this! Triggers warm fuzzy feelings in us. <3
13. Thomas Ong (@thomasong17)
Number of followers: 32k
On Instagram, Thomas Ong calls himself Toto Ong. Maybe the number 17 is a hint?
In 2012, Ong returned to MediaCorp with a three-year contract. More recently, he could be seen in Channel 8 drama Three Wishes, a role he was nominated Best Actor for.
Also, this babyfaced veteran seemed to have discovered the fountain of youth, seeing how well he has maintained his looks. He certainly does not look 46!
The way he behaves does not reflect his age either – check out the selfie of him cheekily sticking his tongue out! :p
12. Mark Lee (@marklee4444)
Number of followers: 32.3k
First thing we noticed: a 4D number! Don’t share we never share.
The comedian-cum-host, best known for his
bad skin sarcasm, might have attracted followers by showcasing a different side of him on Instagram. Who says a grown man cannot act cute?
Meh! Meh! Lee wishing everyone a goat xi fa cai.
It’s not just a girl’s prerogative to pout – Lee totally nailed the duck face.
He can even imitate Angry Bird!
11. Tay Ping Hui (@taypinghui)
Number of followers: 37.8k
Who can forget the legendary Tay Ping Hui? We may not see him on our tv screens as frequently now, but he’ll always have a place in our hearts. This is how we’ve always remembered him to be – playing a policeman armed with a pistol:
However, beneath his seemingly cool facade lies a goofy man.
Seems like he’s pretty good with kids too.
10. Pierre Png (@iampierrepng)
Number of followers: 41.8k The veteran artiste of Peranakan descent is known for his role as Phua Chu Kang’s brother, Phua Chu Beng. 19 years have passed since, but Png does not seem to have aged. No, this is not a recent picture of Png although he looks almost exactly the same. His caption seemed to imply that this is a photo from his teenage years. What’s the difference between then and now though? ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Those biceps tho.
Just as we were drooling while scrolling through his feed, this photo had to show up:
Right. He’s taken. Lucky you, Andrea!
9. Shaun Chen (@shaunchenhongyu)
Number of followers: 42.5k Formerly better known as the ex-husband of Michelle Chia, Chen has made a name for himself in the industry. After starring in dramas like Blessings and blockbuster The Journey: Tumultuous Times, his popularity skyrocketed and he managed to clinch his first Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes award in this year’s Star Awards, an achievement he attained after being in the business for 13 years. No wonder he’s kissing his award. We would too.
Dat pose. Looking dapper in his suit and perfectly coiffed hair too.
Still on form even on his off days and looking mysterious with that pair of shades 8).
8. Zheng Geping (@zhenggeping)
Number of followers: 52.6k This hunkle (hunk-uncle) might be among the oldest on our list, but his body would put many others’ to shame. Just look at this. ‘Nuff said.
Of course, it’s not as easy as it seems…
…and you gotta look fabulous while workin’ it.
7. Pornsak (@pornsakp)
Number of followers: 64.8k Despite having lost his mother to cancer at a tender age and having to cope in a new environment in Singapore after relocating from Thailand, Pornsak stayed optimistic and chirpy, as reflected from the programmes he hosts. With a sunny disposition, it’s no wonder he’s an auntie-killer. Mama lemon for you? We’re sure the aunties cannot resist.
Bonus points for being a filial son.
Who looks this happy while cooking?
6. Christopher Lee (@aiainbaby)
Number of followers: 74.7k Seems like Caldecott’s ah ge (big brother) is not exactly one of the most popular celebrities on Instagram. Unlike his wife Fann Wong, who has 184k followers, Lee is lagging way behind. Not that he minds, we think. If you’re wondering why his handle is so weird, it’s probably so he and Wong can have couple-y handles on Instagram. While Wong’s handle is fannaiaiwong, his is aiainbaby. We’re guessing he’s the baby then? Apart from the interesting handle, Lee uploads some snippets of his life revolving around Wong and baby Zed. We stalk our favourite condor heroes and here are some of our faves:
Who says it’s tacky to wear couple shirts? Also, Chris rockin’ that floral headband.
Baby Zedzed’s attempt at bullying his daddy. Seems like Lee is unable to cope without Wong!
More lovey dovey moments. Awwww… <3
5. Desmond Tan (@thedesmondtan)
Number of followers: 97.4k Having secured his first Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes award last year, Tan fell out of favour this year and left Star Awards empty handed. As he quoted James Dean in his Instagram caption, “Being a good actor isn’t easy. Being a man is even harder. I want to be both before I’m done.”. The accompanying photo:
Looking pretty much like a man, we think. Tan proceeds to make everyone jealous by taking a selfie with gorgeous SIA girls. What’s with his hair though?
But maybe the air stewardesses think he’s cuter than the roos?
4. Aloysius Pang (@aloypang)
Number of followers: 135k The recipient of this year’s Star Awards‘ Best Newcomer Award, the up-and-coming actor has a strong following of 135k on Instagram. Often mistaken as child actor Shawn Lee from movie I Not Stupid, Pang was also a child star. His popularity has been on the rise, after starring in several Channel 8 dramas like World at Your Feet and more recently, Tiger Mum. In the drama, Pang plays a hao lian (proud) rebellious teenager Chen Hao Lian.
Nope! He is nothing like his onscreen character in real life. *winks*
Playing it cool…
3. Xu Bin (@xubin_)
Number of followers: 154k Xu was a contestant in Campus Superstar’s second season, but got eliminated during the first round. He then forayed into acting in 2012, and has bagged several awards since. This year, he won Toggle’s Outstanding Duke award and the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes award. Seems like this duke is popular with the ladies as well…
This picture would surely break the fragile hearts of many girls…
But what to do when you’ve gained the adoration of so many girls?
2. Ian Fang (@ian_ianization)
Number of followers: 160k The rising star might have been in showbiz for only four years, but he’s definitely charmed many hearts and even managed to clinch the much-coveted Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes award this year. With his boyish good looks, Fang engages followers on Instagram with countless selfies that invite a slew of compliments. Surprise, surprise! Even a celeb takes public transport. According to Fang’s caption, North East Line is his favourite. Fangirls, try your luck on NEL! Who knows, you might even get stuck on the same train as Fang during a breakdown. 😉
Why not ask him for a selfie too? We’ll sure he’ll gladly oblige.
Or ask him out for drinks?
The winner on this list goes to…
1. Elvin Ng (@elvinngchoonsiong)
Number of followers: 161k One of MediaCorp’s eight dukes, Ng never fails to make a statement with his incoherent speeches at the Star Awards every year. On Instagram, he continues confusing his followers with weird and random captions. Check out this photo he took with Becks, along with an unrelated caption:
Don’t understand? It’s okay – we don’t either. But fans love him all the same anyway. <3
If you’re jealous of his megawatt smile, maybe you’ll pick up some tips from the way Ng brushes his teeth. Yes, he uploaded a video of him brushing his teeth on Instagram. And it amassed over 5,000 likes.
Remember to brush your teeth (at least twice a day), rinse your mouth, eat a balanced diet, and visit the dentist (every half yearly)! Look after your gums and teeth.
