The new kid on the block

Yesterday (29 Dec), the Ministry of Education (MOE) unveiled the name of its new junior college (JC) — Eunoia Junior College.

The new JC will be offering an Integrated Programme (IP), and will start taking in its first cohort of students in 2017 from CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School, Catholic High School, and Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS). Nonetheless, the school will also accept O-level students from other secondary schools.

The new JC will be temporarily sited at the former Raffles Junior College campus in Mount Sinai until end 2019, when its permanent campus housed at the junction of Sin Ming Avenue and Marymount Road is ready.

The word Eunoia, which stemmed from Greek roots, means beautiful thinking and goodwill towards others.

Eunoia whut?

Just one question – how in the world do you pronounce it?

Fortunately, MOE has taken to Facebook to share the correct pronunciation of the word.

So now you know, ya?

If you still don’t know, maybe this will help:

The Internet responds

With a name like that, of course the Internet had to respond.

Easiest cheer ever to remember. Future Eunoia JC students will have no excuse to not cheer for their school!

2. Barbarella, President of the SPGs the English teacher

3. The GPS

4. Chinese name 是什么?

Although the Chinese characters should be 知道, we get the drift. Here’s Eunoia JC’s Chinese name — a less memorable name compared to the one the netizen had guessed:

The petition has started

Meanwhile, less-than-pleased parents and students are already proposing a name change. The petition has garnered 135 signatures as of time of writing.

Will the JC’s name eventually be changed? MOE, only you know ah.
