Night Festival 2017 Happens From 18 to 26 August

The Singapore Night Festival is back for its 10th year, and kick off your weekends with a massive celebration.

With exhilarating performances and captivating light installations, satisfy your penchant for the night life and be enthralled.

Starting 18 Aug and lasting a week, head down to any of the five festival zones along Bugis and Bras Basah and catch the following:

1. Lose yourself in a cavern of lights and sharp turns

Phosphene By Praxis+ is a tunnel filled with twinkling lights, reflective surfaces, and sudden turns. This installation celebrates memories of the Night Festivals over the last decade, and is created by a team of students from Singapore University of Technology and Design. While the installation may appear large, expect massive crowds as every Singaporean and their partner looks for the perfect couple Instagram.

Where: National Design Centre, 111 Middle Road, Singapore 188969

When: 18 – 26 Aug 7.30pm to 12am

2. Head on to tripsville with this kaleidoscopic iridescent cube

Yantronomy is inspired by the Hindu diagram of triangles, which is used for worship. In this case however, the mirrors create a kaleidoscopic cube, creating multiple versions of whoever steps in. It examines the possibility of alternate realities and what happens when they clash.

Where: Chijmes, The Lawn Level 1, 30 Victoria Street, Singapore 187996

When: 18 – 26 Aug 7.30pm to 12am

3. Stuff that rumbling stomach with hipster market food

Of course, every Night Festival has to come with food. This year, grab bites from festival market favourites, like The Wicked Cream Co, The Lab SG, and Sofnade.

Where: Singapore Management University, Campus Green

When: 24 – 26 Aug 6pm to 12am

4. Tickle your sense of smell with Aesop’s scents

Almost every single person I know has some affection for Aesop’s free samples and scents. With the exhibit taking place in the dark, use your nose to explore Nostos – Records of The Self, as Aesop creates scents to evoke both old memories and new experiences.

Where: National Museum of Singapore, Gallery 10, 93 Stamford Road, Singapore 178897

When: 18 – 20 Aug 10am to 12am, 21 – 24 Aug 10am to 10pm, 25 – 26 Aug 10am to 12am

5. Experience a free circus show with pyrotechnics and videos

Too cheapo to go for Cirque du Soleil’s Kazoo? Well, Dutch street theater group Close-Act Theatre bring Globe to within meters of the audience, wowing you with circus techniques, pyrotechnics, and video projection. Like a flash mob theatre, they just set up shop in the middle of a grass patch, and bring their acts quite literally to their audience’s faces.

Where: Cathay Green, opposite The Cathay

When: 24 – 26 Aug 8pm to 8.30pm, 10.30pm to 11pm

6. Watch the National Museum of Singapore’s facade transform with light and laser

Every year, the facade of the National Museum of Singapore turns into a canvas of art and exhibition. This year, Convolutions features lights and lasers that adorn its signature white front, accompanied by music composed by French group EZ3kiel. The building will play host to a poetic ballet where the ancient and modern coexist in harmony.
