PAP finally reveals their Aljunied team
Earlier today (28 Aug), the People’s Action Party (PAP) revealed their team for the Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC). The five-man team was introduced to the media by Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Aljunied GRC is currently held by the Workers’ Party (WP). A WP team consisting of secretary-general Low Thia Khiang, Chairman Sylvia Lim, Chen Show Mao, Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap became the first team to win a GRC when they beat the PAP back in 2011. WP has already announced that the same team will be defending their seats in Parliament against any team that the PAP sends.
MustShareNews takes a look at the 5 best quotes from the press conference held earlier today.
1. The man worried about youths — Chua Eng Leong
Son of former Cabinet Minister Chua Sian Chin, he joined the PAP in 2011. He feels that being in politics is just another name for service to the nation.
Why the PAP? I was born PAP — it’s about Passion, Ability and Purposeful service.
2. The Homecoming — Yeo Guat Kwang
A former Member of Parliament (MP) for Aljunied before moving to Ang Mo Kio in 2011, he says it feels good to be home. He spoke of his desire to continue championing labour issues — helping workers increase their employability.
I’m a PAP man — I’m a man who serves with passion and purpose. I remind myself to be practical, pragmatic, get to the root of the problem and help.
3. The Multilingual Man — K Muralidharan Pillai
Murali spoke in English, Tamil, Malay and Mandarin during his unveiling. He expressed his gratitude at being given the opportunity to contest in the upcoming general election even though he is the son of an ex-political detainee.
He says his focus will be on social mobility — ensuring that families make full use of the opportunities they are given.
I don’t know how long my political career will be — it could be 10 days … I’m not fazed by the odds. I will fight this election with all my heart.
4. The soft-hearted former HOD — Shamsul Kamar
Currently the Chairman of PAP’s Kaki Bukit Branch, he expressed his desire to help students who are less academically inclined complete their education. He says this based on his experience as the former Head of Department (HOD) at Spectra Secondary School, adding that education is an effective social leveller.
Why? Given the chance, they never fail to surprise me. I will work with like-minded stakeholders if elected to give them more opportunities in life.
5. The man with his heart set — Victor Lye
Chairman of the National Council Against Drug Abuse, he is an Aljunied resident who has been involved in grassroots work since 1999. A firm believer of leading from the ground, he says his experience in the private sector helps him understand problems faced by Singaporeans.
After 2011, it would have been easy to walk away. But we are here to serve and that hasn’t changed. Where few dare to tread, it’s more meaningful because I finally know where my heart is.
A team strong enough to beat WP?
Well, DPM Tharman certainly thinks so…
I think this team has more than a fighting chance. They really want to prove their worth and serve residents better.
…but his opinion doesn’t really matter come Polling Day.
Aljunied has most certainly become a contest to monitor closely. It will be up to the residents of Aljunied to decide whether they still want WP to be in charge or if PAP deserves a chance to make amends for the shortcomings that made residents vote them out in the first place. Guess we’ll only find out come Polling Day!
