Terrexes Coming Home
Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen has posted very welcome news for the Chinese New Year: Our Terrexes are coming home!
On Tuesday (Jan 24) evening, Dr Ng posted the short message on Facebook, and wished Singaporeans would have a happy reunion for the Chinese New Year. He did not elaborate on the details:
SAF Terrexes are coming home to Singapore. Looking forward to this happy reunion with all Singaporeans in the Year of the Rooster.
The Singapore Armed Forces’ Terrex vehicles were impounded by the Hong Kong customs authorities on Nov 23, 2016 as they were on the way back from a military training session in Taiwan.
Read our story on China not wanting to return Singapore’s Terrexes. Read also Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speech earlier this month, when he said “big countries should treat smaller countries as equals instead of acting as a hegemon, imposing their will on others”.
A short statement from Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released on Jan 24 also confirmed that the Terrexes were coming home.
It said that Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun Ying had replied to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s earlier letter to him, and said the “Hong Kong authorities have completed their investigations, and will be releasing the SAF Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicles and other equipment to the Singapore Government through the carrier”.
Dr Ng’s message is certainly welcome news for the Chinese New Year.
We look forward to seeing our property back in Singapore.
