We wonder how hard TODAY had to look to find Carol Yuen
So a certain Carol Yuen Ai Zhen recently wrote to TODAY (26 February) with an opinion piece titled “Reasons for petrol duty hikes sound”.
If you remember, Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said in his 2015 Budget speech on Monday (23 February) that there would be an increase in petrol duty rates. Prices would go up by 20 cents a litre for premium grade petrol, and 15 cents a litre for intermediate grade petrol. And the reason Minister gave?
“To encourage less car usage and reduce carbon emissions.”
Carol Yuen’s letter
First, she criticised a writer who had previously written in to complain about the petrol price hike.
She then agrees with the rationale for the price hike.
Her letter obviously did not go down well with netizens, who were mostly enraged and indignant over the news.
The netizens’ response
1. The angry
We can’t help but agree.
2. The personal attacks
Oops, kind of harsh from Grand Master Wilson Choo who hails from the University of Life and Experience: Earth.
Model student Carol Yuen.
3. The general sentiments
Well, here’s an appropriate quote that Singapore could have been thinking of.
“I don’t fit into any stereotypes. And I like myself that way.”
-C. Joybell C.
4. The rational-minded
We also need to remove the mindset that owning a car is a definite measure of success.
5. The “Minister, I Challenge You”
PM Lee, it’s your call.
6. The interrogator
The manhunt has begun.
