Singapore Spurs Supporters’ Club and AIA team up for a good cause

When an earthquake struck the Malaysian state of Sabah on 5th June this year, many Singaporeans held their breath. Sabah is home to Mount Kinabalu, a favourite for some Singapore schools to hold overseas learning journeys. At the time of the earthquake, students and teachers from Fuchun Secondary, Greenridge Secondary and Tanjong Katong Primary School (TKPS) were on the mountain.

When news came that they were found dead, the nation mourned as one. A tribute corner was set up at TKPS for member of the public to send condolences to the family of those affected. Of the 10 Singaporeans who did not return alive, 7 were students of TKPS.

Sonia Jhala the Spurs fan

A Facebook page was set up in memory of 12-year-old Sonia Jhala, encouraging friends and family to share their memories of the TKPS student.

Sonia was a avid fan of English Premier League (EPL) side Tottenham Hotspur. When Tottenham was made known of this incident, they sent a letter to Sonia’s family, extending their deepest condolences. The letter was even signed by Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino himself.

Last week however, they went one better. In a trip organised by the Singapore Spurs Supporters’ Club and Tottenham sponsor AIA, the Jhala family were invited to Tottenham’s stadium, White Hart Lane.

Mr Jhala had promised his daughter to visit White Hart Lane before it gets demolished to make way for a new stadium. He added that among his three kids, Sonia was the most ardent and passionate supporter of the club.

The full video can be found on Tottenham’s website.

The family got a tour of the club and got to watch Spurs take on Stoke City on Aug 15. They also got to meet fan favourite and former Spurs captain, Ledley King.

Although they were uncertain of whether they wanted to go ahead with the trip to London, the family felt that it was what Sonia would have wanted.

Mr Jhala said he would miss his daughter’s presence most with the start of the new EPL season.

It’s going to be very, very difficult for me to watch the new EPL season, because she was my buddy.
