S’pore confirms 2 locally-transmitted mpox cases, men were ‘likely infected through sexual activities’

Two men in Singapore confirmed infected with mpox

The Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) has confirmed two cases of locally transmitted mpox clade Ib infection on Thursday (2 April) in a press release.

“Both are very likely infected through sexual activities, and are in stable condition,” CDA said.

According to CDA, mpox is mainly spread through intimate or prolonged physical contact, including sexual contact.

Authorities said the overall risk to the general public remains low.

First case involves 30-year-old man with no travel history

The first case is a 30-year-old male, the press release said.

He had no recent travel history but reported recent sexual contact.

The man developed symptoms on 25 March, was admitted to hospital on 30 March, and his infection was confirmed on 31 March.

He has since been discharged and placed on home isolation until 20 April, CDA said.

Second case linked to first patient

The second case is a 34-year-old male, who had recent travel history and reported sexual contact.

He also had “prolonged physical contact with the first case”, according to CDA.

The man developed symptoms on 26 March and sought medical care on 31 March.

His infection was confirmed on 1 April.

He is currently in stable condition and isolating at home until 21 April.

Investigations and contact tracing are ongoing, as close contacts have been advised to monitor their health and seek medical attention if unwell.

“High-risk contacts will be recommended mpox vaccination as post-exposure prophylaxis,” CDA said.

Vaccine available for high-risk groups

CDA said population-wide vaccination is not recommended.

However, vaccines are available for high-risk groups on a self-paid basis.

These are currently offered at the following clinics:

  • Department of Sexually Transmitted Infections Control Clinic
  • Tanjong Pagar Medical Clinic
  • Dr Jay Medical Centre
  • Anteh Dispensary

The vaccine will also be available at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) from May 2026.

CDA urged the public to remain vigilant, advising against high-risk sexual behaviours, such as having multiple or casual partners.

Travellers were also advised to practise good hygiene and avoid contact with unwell individuals.

Those who develop symptoms such as a fever or a rash within 21 days of travel should seek medical care promptly and should inform doctors of their travel and exposure history.
