Couple in M’sia with 33-year age gap gets married less than 2 months after they first met

Couple with 33-year age gap gets married less than 2 months after meeting

A couple in Malaysia with an age gap of 33 years got married on 20 Oct, less than two months after they first met.

Moreover, 28-year-old Norain Azlyin Abd Rasad agreed to marry 61-year-old retiree Awang Zainal Abidin Awang Damit Yahya less than a month after they were introduced.

The couple gained attention on social media after Ms Norain uploaded their photos and videos on TikTok.

Agreed to marry less than a month after meeting

Speaking to Harian Metro, Ms Norain said she was previously in a 10-year marriage and had just separated from her ex-husband in April.

According to her, the thought of getting married this year had never crossed her mind, given her recent separation.

However, on 2 Sept, her uncle introduced her to his friend, Mr Awang, at a restaurant.

“At first, I wondered why I had been introduced to someone much older, but after talking to him, I realised he wasn’t like other men because he didn’t take advantage of me,” she shared.

Meanwhile, Mr Awang had been married twice and his second wife died in 2022.

Ms Norain said that her now-husband seemed serious about marrying her when they met. So much so that he met her parents soon after meeting and expressed his intent.

Her parents agreed with the union despite the age gap as both Ms Norain and Mr Awang refused to see each other without a legitimate relationship.

“Besides, I’m a single mother who just finished my ‘iddah’ (a woman’s waiting period after divorce in Islam) so it would be bad optics,” she explained.

Husband’s youngest son is same age as his new wife

The couple’s children from past marriages also accepted their decision to marry, despite Mr Awang’s youngest being the same age as Ms Norain,

“I am happy because I have never felt that happiness before… I am comfortable with him because our thoughts and journeys in life are almost the same,” Ms Norain expressed.

Meanwhile, Mr Awang says he does not see his wife’s younger age and their having children from previous marriages as obstacles for them to marry.

“From the beginning of our acquaintance, we were compatible and I also love the boys, so I consider them as my own flesh and blood,” he said.

“I hope for a happy marriage and a long-lasting marriage.”
