If there’s ever a manual on how to lead a long and healthy life, one of the ‘secrets’ would likely involve exercising regularly.
The Singapore government seems to be well aware of that.
On Saturday (13 July), Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was present at the opening of the first ActiveSG gym in Ang Mo Kio Community Centre designed for the elderly and disabled in mind.
By the way, if you’re above the age of 65, you can enter the gym for free every Wednesday.
PM Lee first announced last September that such gyms will be opening in mature housing estates across Singapore.
In addition to the new ActiveSG gym, Singaporeans can expect 4 more of such gyms in the near future. Here are their locations:
The location of the last gym has not been revealed.
Members of the public can enter these gyms at just $2.50 per entry.
But Singaporeans above the age of 65 get to enter for free every Wednesday.
The new ActiveSG gym boast exercise equipment that are “suitable for the elderly”.
Equipment for popular exercises like lat pulldowns, chest presses and leg curls operate using air pressure, unlike conventional ones that make use of cables and levers.
These equipment are ‘gentler’ on users’ joints, which will hugely benefit older users who may suffer from conditions like osteoporosis.
The gym also has multiple health screening equipment that allow users to check on their level of fitness.
We are heartened by the government efforts to promote fitness among our increasingly ageing population.
Let’s hope more elderly will pay these ‘senior gyms’ a visit, especially since they get a free entry every Wednesday.
If you’re planning a trip down soon yourself, or with your parents, here’s the location of the new Ang Mo Kio gym.
