Although Singapore has slowly started to reopen in phases, citizens will not be going back to life before ‘Circuit Breaker’.
In fact, if the nation might even undergo a second ‘Circuit Breaker’ if cases and clusters multiply quickly.
This was announced by Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong in a national broadcast on Tuesday (9 Jun).
In his address, Mr Wong once again reiterated that Singaporeans have to learn to live with Covid-19 in the long run.
This is because the virus is not likely to “go away”, leaving the population vulnerable for a long time.
If Singapore manages to keep the situation under control, the nation could enter Phase 2 before the end of the month.
Travel restrictions might also be eased further, allowing Singapore to extend ‘green lanes’ with more countries.
However, Mr Wong mentioned that it would take some time before air travel recovers in a “significant way”, or before the nation can open up for mass market travel.
But with easing restrictions, comes an inevitable rise in Covid-19 cases. During this period, the nation will need to manage community infection rates.
If Singapore is able to keep community infection rates stable, the government will continue its phased approach in reopening.
Otherwise, the nation risks a second round of ‘Circuit Breaker’ measures.
To ensure that doesn’t come to happen, citizens need to cooperate with Covid-19 guidelines to keep everyone safe.
They should practise safe distancing, wash their hands regularly, wear masks, and adhere to the recommended measures.
Mr Wong says,
We must stay disciplined and vigilant, and not let our guard down.
Although what Mr Wong says is nothing new, it also means his words still ring true.
Unless we keep the situation under control, we risk facing a repeat of the ‘Circuit Breaker’ measures – something we definitely don’t want.
