PM Anwar sends fruit basket to PM Wong after annual M’sia-S’pore Leaders’ Retreat postponed

Fruit basket sent by Anwar to Wong included ‘Get Well Soon’ message

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (4 Dec), PM Wong thanked Mr Anwar and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, for their care package.

A photo he shared of the goodies showed a basket filled to the brim with various fruits like grapes, blueberries, dragonfruit, pears and oranges.

A card accompanying the basket carried a “get well soon” message from Mr Anwar and Dr Wan Azizah.

PM also received seafood crab meat fish maw soup

In the lower corner of the photo, it was apparent that the package didn’t just contain fruits, but something more tantalising.

On top of a plastic takeaway box, a card with the Malaysian coat of arms on it stated that it contained premium seafood crab meat fish maw soup.

It also made sure to note in brackets that it contained “real crab meat”.

M’sia-S’pore Leaders’ Retreat postponed

Mr Wong said in his post that he was supposed to head to Kuala Lumpur for the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat, scheduled for this weekend.

However, the meeting has now been postponed due to his Covid-19 infection.

New dates are being worked out, added Mr Wong, saying he looked forward to meeting Mr Anwar again soon.

Meeting with Wong shifted to January: Anwar

Mr Anwar shared Mr Wong’s post on his Facebook page with the caption, “Get well soon brother”.

He told the Senate in KL that he was informed about the postponement on Tuesday night, Bloomberg reported.

Mr Wong didn’t want to pass his infection to Mr Anwar and his wife, he said, adding that the meeting would likely be shifted to January.

M’sia-S’pore Leaders’ Retreat was to be PM Wong’s first

The Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat is an annual meeting between the prime ministers of both countries, alternately hosted in Putrajaya and Singapore.

It is a key platform for the two leaders to discuss bilateral issues and explore new areas of cooperation, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The meeting this weekend was to be the 11th retreat and Mr Wong’s first.

At the meeting, a full-fledged agreement on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JSSEZ) was set to be finalised.

This is according to a Memorandum of Understanding signed in January to work on the JSSEZ.

The JSSEZ, officially announced during the 10th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat in October 2023, aims to “tap into the complementary strengths of both countries to foster economic connectivity by improving cross-border flows of goods, investments, and people”.
