S’pore Man Assaults Police Officers With Twin Brother, Gets Over 4 Years’ Jail

Man Assaults Police Officers With Twin Brother & Gets 4.5 Years’ Jail

Two years ago, two twin brothers in Singapore unleashed what the prosecution described as “one of the worst attacks on police officers to date”.

One officer suffered a traumatic head injury and another suffered a fractured nasal bone after getting headbutted by one of the suspects.

Earlier this year, one of the brothers, Muhammad Fiqkri Jaffri, pleaded guilty to the assault. He recently received a jail term of 4.5 years as well as six strokes of the cane.

His brother Muhammad Farhan Jaffri, who was sentenced in Jun 2021, was given 33 months and four weeks in prison.

The Straits Times (ST) reports that on 23 May, Fiqkri was sentenced to 4.5 years in jail, in addition to six strokes of the cane for his part in the incident.

In April, Fiqkri pleaded guilty to two charges of voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant.

The 28-year-old also admitted to one count each of vandalism, criminal intimidation, and being a member of a secret society.

Appearing in court via a video link, Fiqkri expressed remorse for his behaviour through his attorney. He added that he has been taking medication and receiving religious counselling.

In Jun 2021, his twin brother Farhan received a jail term of 33 months and four weeks, as well as three strokes of the cane and a S$3,500 fine.

Offenders who are guilty of causing grievous hurt to a public servant can receive a jail term of up to 15 years, in addition to being fined or caned.

Assault on officers occurred in Jurong

The incident occurred on the morning of 23 Feb 2020 at the void deck of Block 755, Jurong West Street 74.

Farhan was reportedly arguing with his wife, alerting police to the scene. The situation soon escalated with Farhan hurling vulgarities at the officers.

Fiqkri, who had been sharing a bottle of whisky with his brother, heard the commotion and went down to investigate.

According to ST, Fiqkri approached the officers aggressively, demanding to know what was wrong. He also told Farhan and his wife to leave, which they did so, only for Farhan to return alone minutes later.

Rising tensions then led to both men punching and kicking one of the officers in the face and body.

The officer later managed to pin Fiqkri to the ground, with two other sergeants restraining Farhan.

Fiqkri reportedly taunted one of the officers, claiming he was part of a secret society. Two more officers arrived and arrested him.

Despite his restraints, Fiqkri managed to headbutt yet another sergeant in the face.

Both officers who were attacked went to the hospital for their injuries. The first spent two days in a neurosurgery ward and was on 29 days of hospitalisation leave.

As for the second victim, he received five days of outpatient sick leave due to his fractured nasal bone.

Rightful justice for the assault on public servants

Public servants carry out their duty to protect our community. As such, it is only right to treat them with as much respect as possible.

Hopefully, the brothers’ sentencing will provide some form of justice and closure for the officers who were hurt in the attack.

May it also serve as an important lesson for the twins to reflect on their behaviour and change for the better.
