Man in China attempts suicide in bridge while holding 3 young children

On 22 Nov, a man in Shantou, Guangdong, China, was seen sitting on the guardrail of the Nan’ao Bridge with three children in his arms.

According to Oriental Daily News, the incident occurred at about 4.50pm and the man later attempted suicide by jumping into the sea.

Man carries children on bridge in suicide attempt

A video of the incident has since circulated online. In the video, the man could be seen holding his three children as he sat on the guardrail of the bridge.

A green car with a license plate from Guiyang City, Guizhou, was seen parked next to him.

Passing vehicles could be heard honking around the man, and the cries of the children could be heard at the scene.

Several policemen were also seen present on the bridge, trying to persuade the man to move to safety.

Authorities from Nan’ao County had organised its persuasion and rescue emergency resources after they had received the report about the man.

Man jumps alone into sea

According to reports, the man later left the three children on the bridge and jumped off himself.

Official reports stated that after persuading the man to let go of the children, the authorities were able to evacuate the children safely.

After the man jumped off the bridge, he was immediately rescued by the County Maritime Affairs and Coast Guards. He was then conveyed to the hospital.

 

Latest reports said that the man’s life was not in danger.

Couple’s quarrel led to attempted suicide

In the chat messages circulating online, netizens said that the man and his wife had been travelling to Shantou with their children for a vacation.

After the couple had an argument, the wife left the family.

The man suddenly lost his mind and decided to jump into the sea with his children because he was afraid that no one would take care of them.

The Nan’ao County governmental staff said that the situation is still under investigation.

The Nan’ao County Fire Department and the police also confirmed that the matter had been properly dealt with and that all personnel were safe.
