A shocking incident has left a family in disbelief after their eight-month-old baby appeared to show signs of life during her own funeral.
The baby girl, Kiara Crislayne de Moura dos Santos, was seen moving her hand while in the coffin, despite having been declared dead by medical professionals earlier.
According to Oriental Daily, Kiara was taken to a hospital in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina in the early hours of 19 Oct for a viral infection.
Upon her arrival, doctors determined that the infant was not breathing and had no heartbeat. Shortly after, she was pronounced dead, reported Daily Mail.
A funeral director collected her body two hours later, and the family proceeded with the funeral that same evening.
During the funeral, a relative reached out to touch the baby’s hand, and to their shock, her fingers curled around theirs in response.
This brought the funeral to an abrupt halt as the family realised she was still alive.
Paramedics were quickly called and confirmed that Kiara had a pulse and was breathing. They also noted the absence of rigor mortis, which typically sets in six to eight hours after death.
She was rushed back to the hospital in an attempt to save her life.
Upon her return to the hospital, medical staff attempted to revive Kiara but were ultimately unsuccessful. Her heart stopped again, and she was declared dead for a second time, less than 24 hours after the initial pronouncement.
Kiara’s father, Cristiano Santos, expressed his shock and heartbreak over the ordeal. “We were devastated already. Then there came a little bit of hope, but then this ended up happening.”
The hospital is now facing an investigation by Brazil’s specialist Scientific Police. It admitted that it had initially declared the baby dead the first time and later confirmed her death again when she was brought back.
Correia Pinto City Hall has apologised to the family and promised a thorough investigation, with a report to be completed within 30 days.
