Bedok hawker centre stall receives monthly rental bid of S$6,299, the highest for such stalls in Feb

Stall in Bedok Hawker Centre receives highest bid of S$6,299

A hawker stall at Block 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market has set a new rental record for the food centre after a bid of S$6,299 was placed.

The bid comes after the release of the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) February tender for cooked food stalls across Singapore.

The winning bid was placed by a stall owner who is running a nasi lemak stall at the premise, Lianhe Zaobao reported.

Bedok hawker stall received record bid

The Bedok Food Centre and Market has been operating for more than 40 years with 82 cooked food stalls and 114 market stalls.

Located at Block 216 along Bedok North Street 1, two stalls in the hawker centre popped up on NEA’s February tender.

One stall, selling halal cooked food and Indian cuisine, received bids ranging from S$808 to S$2,288.

However, another stall received bids ranging from S$5,288 to S$6,299 — the highest bid the hawker centre has ever received for a stall. It’s also the highest bid among all cooked food stalls in February.

The high bids were due to the owner’s ability to sell a wider range of products, including:

  • Cooked food
  • Halal cooked food
  • Indian cuisine
  • Drinks
  • Cut fruit

According to Lianhe Zaobao, the hawker centre had only attracted 13 successful tenders since 2012, with prices ranging from S$850 to S$3,200.

With stalls being able to sell a wider range of products this round, the tender naturally attracted higher bids.

Bidder may be current nasi lemak stall owner

The S$6,299 stall was previously selling Indian food, a nearby stall vendor told Zaobao.

The stall owner had shut his business before the Lunar New Year after only being in business for a few months.

According to Zaobao, the S$6,299 bidder, listed under the tender name Chua Yong Ping, is at present also running a nasi lemak stall in the same hawker centre.

Staff members working at the nasi lemak stall were unable to tell the paper what their boss plans to sell at the new stall.

Stalls allocated in fair and transparent manner

According to NEA, there is no minimum bid price during the tender process, and stalls will be awarded to the highest bidder.

The rental price will also be kept unchanged for the the initial three-year tenancy period, after which the rental will be adjusted to the market rate determined by professional valuation.

Valuation factors include the stall size, market conditions and footfall of the hawker centre.

NEA said the tender process “ensures that stalls are allocated in a fair and transparent manner.”
