Singapore Boxing Federation says boxer seen bullying fellow student in video has resolved issue

Singaporean boxer Abdul Wafi Idris came under fire after a video of him bullying another student went viral.

Telegram group ‘SG SHARES’ posted the video on 28 Oct, which was then shared on the r/SingaporeRaw subreddit on 27 Oct, garnering over 409 comments.

The video, identified to have taken place in a toilet at Junyuan Secondary School, showed Abdul Wafi grabbing a fellow student trying to leave.

After tugging at him for a short while, he suddenly threw a fast punch that staggered his target, who fell against the toilet door.

While on the ground, Abdul Wafi kneed him in the head. His victim curled up on the ground with arms over his head.

Another student opened the door at this point to enter the toilet but quickly shut it again after seeing what was going on.

Abdul Wafi then rebuked his target, accusing him of “talking shit” about his “crew”.

Afterwards, he threw more punches and a kick at the body and head of the fallen student.

The assailant then dragged him to the camera and forced him to apologise for his alleged misdeeds.

Netizens urged to contact Singapore Boxing Federation

The Reddit post identified him, noting that Abdul Wafi is currently representing Singapore overseas in the U19 World Boxing Championships.

Netizens in the comments section reacted in anger at the video, rebuking his actions.

A Reddit user even drafted out an email for others to send to the Singapore Boxing Federation (SBF), the controlling body for local boxing.

Others identified his Instagram account, which has since been deleted.

One netizen claimed to be from the same school and said the video took place around 2021 to 2022 based on the outdated house T-shirts seen in the footage.

SBF says Abdul Wafi has grown positively since 2022 incident

An SBF spokesperson told MS News that the federation was aware of the video. They confirmed that the incident took place in 2022, prior to Abdul Wafi joining the Singapore National Boxing Team.

The SBF was not involved in the disciplinary process.

“However, we understand that Mr Abdul Wafi took responsibility for his actions, underwent counseling with his school, and reached an amicable resolution with the other party involved.”

The SBF spokesperson further stated that Abdul Wafi had “demonstrated significant personal growth since the incident”.

They said he had been held to the same high standards of conduct as other SBF athletes since joining the national boxing programme.

“We are confident that Mr Abdul Wafi has grown as an individual, channelling his energy productively through the sport,” the spokesperson told MS News.

The SBF also believed Abdul Wafi is ready to represent Singapore responsibly on the world stage, praising his performance, potential, and accolades in competitions.

“We believe it is important to focus on the present and future.”
