Car knocks down baby deer crossing KJE, driver warns others to be cautious

A routine drive on the Kranji Expressway (KJE) turned into a shocking encounter when a car collided with a baby deer dashing across the road on 28 March.

The 31-year-old driver, who wished to be known as Mr O, recounted the heart-stopping moment, which took place at Exit 2 of the KJE at 8.19pm, in a Reddit post.

He slowed the car down to 40km/h to let it pass. Just as he thought the danger had cleared, he noticed a baby deer following closely behind.

Mr O exclaimed in shock, and despite hitting the brakes, it was too late — his car struck the fawn, sending it skidding a short distance down the road.

To his relief, the baby deer quickly regained its balance and bolted to the roadside.

Afterwards, his passenger asked him why he didn’t see the deer.

“Oh my goodness. I didn’t see the second one,” he explained.

Mr O slowly drove to a maintenance lane a short distance ahead and alighted to check his car.

To his relief, he saw no sign of damage to his car or any blood, suggesting that the impact was not very severe.

When he looked back, the deer was nowhere to be seen.

Man shocked by deer appearing on road

“I was shocked and very surprised to see deer on [a] Singapore road. This is not something you will often encounter here.” Mr O told MS News.

He added that he didn’t know why the deer were headed towards the KJE.

Some netizens identified it as a sambar deer, a species whose population has been making a comeback in Singapore.

Reflecting on the experience, Mr O said he would now be more cautious about wildlife while driving.

In his Reddit post, he urged other motorists to beware of such situations as well.

Several commenters under the post also criticised the passenger for “asking dumb questions”.

Mr O said to MS News that he found them unsympathetic, as both he and the passenger were “in shock” from the incident, resulting in the passenger’s remarks.

“I think it’s not fair that they are judging her on such a short moment,” he opined.
