‘Just tea without pearls’: Netizen questions why Singaporeans are obsessed with Chagee & Luckin Coffee

Netizen questions the craze over China-born chains Chagee and Luckin Coffee

A local netizen has sparked discussion online after questioning the popularity of tea chains such as Chagee and Luckin Coffee, describing them as “bubble tea without pearls”.

The post appeared on the r/askSingapore subreddit on 22 Dec, where the user asked why people would flock to these outlets when bubble tea shops sell similar drinks — but with pearls.

Netizen puzzled by hype over tea with no bubbles

In the post, the original poster (OP) said they genuinely did not understand the appeal of these newer China-born tea chains.

They asked fellow Singaporeans to “enlighten” them on why so many people seemed obsessed with brands like Chagee and Luckin Coffee.

According to the OP, the drinks sold were essentially “regular milk tea and stuff without any pearls”.

“Why in the world would people want to go buy there then if you can also get the same already from BBT shops but with pearls?” they questioned.

The OP also compared the chains to Starbucks, noting that at least Starbucks outlets typically offer a “cosy environment you can settle in”.

In contrast, most Chagee and Luckin Coffee outlets were described as street-side stores meant primarily for takeaway.

Netizens jump in to explain the appeal

The post quickly drew responses from other Reddit users, many of whom were eager to weigh in.

One netizen jokingly suggested that the OP must be “Koi’s latest social media intern”, poking fun at the comparison with bubble tea brands.

Another pointed out that Luckin Coffee’s prices can be significantly lower than Starbucks’, especially with the frequent vouchers and discounts offered.

Others boil it down to preferences. Some said they preferred Chagee for its stronger tea flavour, less sweetness, and focus on tea quality rather than toppings.

Several commenters also noted that not everyone wants pearls, and that these chains cater to customers who prefer lighter, less sugary drinks or are simply looking for a quick takeaway option.
