Update (17 May, 1.15pm): The post has been updated to reflect new info with regard to the delivery process & the initiative.

When times aren’t great for most of us, it’s heartening to see local citizens chip in to help in whatever ways they can.
Poh Kee Chicken Rice for instance had received a bulk order of bentos from an “old customer” & his team who wished to donate meals for a good cause.
Here’s how the owner & customer’s team went above and beyond to zhng their meals with braised eggs & cherry tomatoes, ensuring that everyone who received their meals were well-fed.
You can read the full account in the post here, we summarise the story after the jump.
Similar to other F&B outlets who’ve been dealing with lower footfall during Circuit Breaker, Poh Kee Chicken Rice at Toa Payoh North’s business had also taken a hit.
The owner – Mr Michael – shared that his longtime customer decided to make a bulk order to provide food to encourage staff at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and NCID.
The hawker then sourced for a cheaper supplier to purchase plastic bento boxes to keep the food warm.
Mr Michael also promised to add a braised egg for every bento box purchased in support of the staff.
As kindness begets kindness, the owner soon found other Singaporeans willing to chip in to bear the costs of the extra eggs he was intending to add to the bentos.
He transferred these savings into buying cherry tomatoes to add to the mini-salad in the boxes instead. Stickers bearing the words “Thx for ur dedication!” were also added on the lids.
The next step was to deliver the meals to the recipients on time. That’s where Mr Bernard and his friends & family came back into the picture to make the endeavour possible.
The pictures uploaded showed scores of chicken rice bentos successfully packed and shipped off to well-deserving staff.
They were also well-supplied with enough garlic chilli and dark soy sauce to drizzle over their meals.
As to what this meaningful order meant to the chicken rice store vendor, in his words,
Hope that will make a fuller and better meal to whoever is on the receiving end.
He closed his post by thanking all who had contributed to the ‘Egg for a Cause’ initiative.
The kind hawker could only do what he did best – to cook delicious meals to share with his patrons – amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
If you would like to order a meal to support this kind chicken rice store vendor, you can follow Poh Kee Chicken Rice on Facebook.
Do note that bulk orders of above 100 packets will require 2-days advance notice. A deposit is also required, but do feel free to work out the details with the store via Facebook here.
We hope the staff of TTSH enjoyed their lovingly prepared chicken rice bentos, as this hawker’s heartwarming efforts to cook them would have made their days in a simple way.
As for the rest of us, we can also be inspired to kickstart our own community outreach projects just like Mr Bernard & his team’s initiative.
If you’ve started your own pay-it-forward projects, we’d love to hear your stories in the comments below.
