5 New MRT Stations Will Make Choa Chu Kang The ‘Jurong East’ Of Northwest S’pore By 2026

Choa Chu Kang Will Link To 5 Jurong Region Line Stations, Construction Begins In 2020

Singaporeans who stay in Northwest Singapore probably can’t travel as easily to the ‘ulu’ parts of Jurong West, nearer the Boon Lay area — and vice versa.

In the near future, Choa Chu Kang MRT Station may just be the transport hub Singapore Westies need to stay connected to the rest of the island easily.

Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Tuesday (10 Sep), that construction of 5 MRT station on the Jurong Region Line (JRL) will start in 2020 — linking Jurong West residents to the Red Line, and by extension, the Blue Line & upcoming Brown Line.

The new ‘Jurong East’ of Northwest Singapore

With the new and upcoming JRL, Choa Chu Kang (CCK) is set to be the new ‘Jurong East’ of the West. This means commuters have the following options at the station:

  • Choa Chu Kang -> Bukit Panjang LRT to Bukit Panjang Station (Blue Line)
  • Choa Chu Kang -> Woodlands MRT to Thomson-East Coast Line (Brown Line)
  • Choa Chu Kang -> Jurong East MRT (Green Line)
  • Choa Chu Kang -> Boon Lay MRT to Jurong Region Line (Light Blue Line)
  • Choa Chu Kang -> CCK Bus Interchange

CCK will act as an gigantic integrated interchange where people can switch across MRT lines and a myriad of buses.

Residents staying in the West and Northwest of Singapore will easily be able to get from one point to another with shorter travelling times thanks to the new JRL.

The new station will be located beside the existing North-South line and where the old bus interchange was located at.

Lot 1 and Hong Kah Community Club is estimated to be just 2-min away from JRL MRT interchange.

Erasing the ‘ulu’ impression

With Jurong West deemed by many Singaporeans as being the ‘ulu’ part of Singapore, the JRL will provide a more convenient transport option for Singaporeans to access this area, and hopefully allow them to explore them.

For example, people staying in Jurong West can easily get access to the North-south line, the Bukit Panjang LRT as well as the Downtown line.

Also, this means that residents in northern Singapore such as Woodlands and Yishun can easily get to areas such as Jurong West and the prestigious Nanyang Technical University.

Everything comes with a price

According to LTA, a total of $739.5 million is being spent to construct the stations.

A contract of $465.2 million was awarded to Shanghai Tunnel Engineering to construct the 3 stations, Choa Chu Kang, Choa Chu Kang West and Tengah, reports The Straits Times.

While $274.3 million was awarded to local construction companies Eng Lee Engineering and Wai Fong Construction to build Hong Kah and Cooperation.

However, do remember that the JRL is set to complete in 2026. Are you excited about the new line?
