As Singaporeans and tourists were enjoying Orchard Road’s Christmas light-up on a Saturday night, one building shone a bit brighter than others.
A Christmas tree on the rooftop of Design Orchard caught fire, in full view of onlookers.
A video posted on social media platform XiaoHongShu on Saturday (23 Nov) showed the decoration engulfed in flames.
The netizen who posted it said she and her friend had initially thought it was a “special effect”, perhaps considering the advertisement for the movie “Wicked” directly underneath.
However, when the blaze got bigger, they realised that it was a real fire, she said.
A video posted on Facebook showed that the fire was large and bright enough to be seen within the trees from Cairnhill Road, which is next to Design Orchard.
Another video posted on Facebook showed that the fire emitted a huge plume of smoke.
A street artist named Jonathan Tan who was in the area said on Facebook that the fire was put out in 15 minutes or so.
In response to queries from MS News, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at about 9.30pm on Saturday (23 Nov).
It was located at 250 Orchard Rd — the address of Design Orchard.
The blaze involved a Christmas tree on the rooftop of the building, SCDF added.
It was extinguished with two hosereels with no ambulance assistance required.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, SCDF said.
