A 41-year-old man has died after a reported knife attack in Clementi.
Images from a video sent to Lianhe Zaobao by an eyewitness show a man clad in all black walking purposefully through an HDB playground.
He appeared to be carrying a knife in his hand, frightening a member of the public who ran away from him.
A second clip showed a black car being stopped by a police car at the exit of a multistorey carpark, with its driver’s door open.
Shounts can be heard, and members of the public gestured at the black car.
Armed police officers then rushed over in an apparent bid to capture the man.
A 35-year-old resident surnamed Yuan (transliterated from Mandarin) told Zaobao that a man in his 50s or 60s, who drove a car to the scene, had attacked another man with a knife.
The assailant then chased a woman wearing red with the knife around a park, but could not catch up with her.
When he tried to drive away, he was blocked by a police car that had responded to a call.
Several armed police officers then subdued him.
A video seen by The Straits Times (ST) showed the man chasing another man to Block 311B, where he stabbed him repeatedly.
A woman in red and another parking attendant tried to pull him away but he did not relent.
After the victim manages to kick the assailant away, he stabs him again, causing the victim to collapse and lie motionless on the ground.
Residents said the assailant then got into a black car and drove into a carpark, subsequently ramming his car repeatedly into another vehicle.
He stopped at the carpark exit, alighted from the car and lay down on the ground.
Ms Sim Ann, who is an MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, posted on Facebook on Monday night that the incident occurred at Trivelis, a Design, Build and Sell Scheme project along Clementi Avenue 4.
It involved two residents and resulted in a fatality, she said, adding:
My team and I are deeply shocked and saddened by this horrific occurrence.
The family have asked for privacy at this difficult time.
As the suspect has been arrested, residents were urged not to speculate.
Ms Sim thanked eyewitnesses and neighbours for attempting to render assistance during the incident.
In response to queries from MS News, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said it received a call for assistance at about 5pm on Monday (21 Oct).
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), which was alerted at the same time, said the location was Block 311B Clementi Avenue 4.
When the police arrived, a 41-year-old man was lying unconscious at the void deck.
The SCDF conveyed him to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where he subsequently passed away.
Another person was assessed for minor injuries by a paramedic, but declined to be sent to hospital.
In relation to this case, a 50-year-old man was detained at the scene and arrested, the police said, adding:
Preliminary investigations revealed that both parties are known to each other.
Police investigations are ongoing.
