M’sian Woman Bakes CNY Cookies That’ll Fool Your Relatives Into Thinking They’re Real Ornaments

Malaysian Baker Makes CNY Cookies That Are Artistic AF

Delicious snacks and scrumptious treats are one of the highlights of the Chinese New Year. We bet you look forward to the baked goods and desserts during get-togethers with family and friends.

On Wednesday (15 Jan), baker Shirlyn Leong posted amazing pictures of her home-baked CNY cookies on Subtle Asian Traits Facebook group.

They look so artistic, we think they can easily pass off as decorations in our living rooms.

We’ve seen plenty of artistic angbaos and decorations for CNY, but you may consider baking cookies to make guests stop and stare instead.

Ms Leong, who is currently based in the United States, shares with MS News that these are decorated sugar cookies baked with basic ingredients like butter, sugar, flour, egg, and flavouring.

An avid baker of 6 years, she was, no doubt, inspired by CNY decorations. Ms Leong said the idea was to create cookies that look like glass and tassels.

Let’s take a closer look at her masterpieces.

Spring, fortune, lion & tassels

We’ve seen the Chinese character “chun” – meaning spring in English – in every living room. However, nothing can beat this majestic cookie elegantly decorated with golden flowers and leaves.

Shirlyn hopes that this cookie – shaped like the Chinese character “fu” – will bring you prosperity and happiness. It’s so intricately stunning, we hope we could keep it forever instead of ingesting it.

Fans of lion dances will never forget the beating drums and clashing cymbals that are believed to chase away evil.

You may be waiting for lion dance performances on the streets, but in the meantime, you can get a dose of good luck through this cookie.

The talented baker also has creative Chinese ornaments that are cookies made entirely out of royal icing.

Instead of munching on these cookies, we’re tempted to hang these artistic ornaments in our walls. Here’s to hoping that the ants won’t eat them.

We love to give and get angbaos from our loved ones during the upcoming holidays. Although we don’t mind getting one of these delicious cookies from our relatives too.

Was it all a pain to master? Ms Leong, who runs her business Cookies Art by Shirlyn as an instructor, tells MS News that cookie decorating requires a lot of practice to master.

The most important thing I’ve been telling my students is the icing consistency. Once you mastered the consistency, you will be able to do anything.

So it’s best to learn the basics, and success will come with a lot of practice and patience. She espoused,

Cookie art has infinite potential, any idea can turn into cookie form. I hope more people will learn about it, see its value and appreciate them more.
