A customer was halfway through her bowl of soup when she discovered a large adult cockroach in the dish.
The incident took place at an eatery in Chinese Gardens MRT station.
Unsurprisingly, the huge insect left the customer shocked, especially since she had already started consuming the soup.
On Saturday (2 Nov) morning, a netizen named Ms Wong took to the Complaint Singapore Facebook group to share about the incident that happened to her friend.
Speaking to MS News, Ms Wong said she and her friend visited the eatery that morning where the latter had ordered a bowl of eight treasure congee (八宝粥).
After eating a few spoonfuls of the porridge, Ms Wong’s friend fished out an adult cockroach from the brown translucent soup.
According to Ms Wong, the cockroach measured about 3cm to 4cm.
Taken aback by the discovery, Ms Wong helped to lodge a report using the OneService app.
Ms Wong told MS News that she visits the eatery about once every month but this is her first time encountering such an incident.
SFA investigating the incident
Speaking to MS News, the Singapore Food Agency said that it is investigating the incident.
“SFA takes a serious view towards food safety and will investigate all feedback alleging poor food safety practices.”
SFA is currently gathering more information regarding the incident and said that it will “not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence has been obtained”.
“Food safety is a joint responsibility,” it added in its statement. “While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices.”
Members of the public are encouraged to report their concerns about food safety practices by food operators via its feedback form.
