S’poreans Treat Frontline Healthcare Workers To Coffee & Chicken Rice So They’ll Stay Well-Fed On Duty

Over $24,000 Raised For Healthcare Workers To Get Free Coffee, Chicken Rice Campaign Ongoing

With news of healthcare workers like nurses being discriminated against in public, it seems like nurses are facing additional challenges even outside the workplace. Thus, many Singaporeans decided to raise funds to support these workers.

The money raised under 2 initiatives went to buying coffee and even chicken rice for the healthcare workers who are working “over 100 hours” a week.

Buying “booster shots” to give energy

A former healthcare worker, Ms Chen, and her friends wanted to do something for the numerous healthcare workers who gave up their family time to fight the virus. They started off with raising around $4,000 in just a day.

The money went towards buying “Booster Shots” for healthcare workers. The play on words – originally for vaccines – refers to the free coffees they could claim from cafes at the hospital to boost their energy.

In Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) alone, 500 cups of coffee were claimed in a day.

Their efforts did not go to waste — a motivated nurse thanked them saying she would “work harder because of your caffeine”

With just one coffee, many of the staff on the frontlines felt appreciated for their hard work.

People buying chicken rice for healthcare workers

Another group of Singaporeans are giving healthcare workers extra fuel to power through their shift through a popular local dish.

OK Chicken Rice started a “cheer-up campaign” to encourage and thank healthcare workers during this crisis.

The store sends hearty meals comprising chicken rice, half a braised egg, otak and tofu, to TTSH.

People responded with generosity and love — some even bought 100 packs to show their support. To put things into perspective, they made a $300 contribution to the campaign.

The outcome was heartwarming as the store shared that the money funded 400 packs in total within the first day alone.

Many of us might want to support and encourage our warriors on the frontline too, but are unsure of who to donate to.

When contacted by MS News, the store mentioned that they will start with delivering to the National Centre for Infectious Disease and TTSH. Meanwhile, they are awaiting replies from other hospitals.
