Café in China serves coffee with steamed chicken & coriander

A café in China has made headlines for serving coffee topped with steamed chicken and coriander.

A post on Weibo reported that staff members at the café were brainstorming for a drink that represented Guangdong Province when they settled on “white cut chicken” (白切鸡).

The dish is reportedly similar to steamed chicken served at chicken rice stalls in Singapore.

The Weibo post also came with a clip showing how the concoction was assembled.

Slices of chicken — topped with coriander — were first added to a cup of ice. The barista then added milk to the protein before adding shots of coffee.

Netizens confused by concoction

The unusual combination has drawn amusement, confusion, and outrage among Chinese netizens.

“Isn’t it better to eat and drink these separately?” one commenter asked.

Another netizen said that the drink was simply unpalatable.

While most were either angry or confused by the combination, some users were also amazed by the unusual combination.

However, some of the outrage has seemingly been taken a step too far.

Local media reported that some netizens are accusing the café of using the barista who came up with the drink to gain sympathy. The barista reportedly has autism.

The barista’s family has also faced significant scrutiny, with some people even calling the shop to express their anger.

This isn’t the first time unusual coffee variations have surfaced in China. Earlier this year, a spring onion coffee trend gained traction on Chinese social media platforms.
