‘Grandma, I hope you understand’: Family in the Philippines places coffin on ceiling amid Typhoon Trami flood

Family places grandmother’s coffin on ceiling amid floods from Typhoon Trami

Typhoon Trami brought widespread devastation to the Philippines, causing flash floods, landslides, and heavy damage across multiple regions.

Amid the severe flooding, a family in Naga City was forced to place their late grandmother’s coffin on the ceiling of their home.

Danice Audrey Abante shared that the floodwaters in their home had risen to neck level, leaving them no choice but to lift the coffin onto the ceiling beams, where it remained for at least five days.

Her grandmother, Elizabeth, died on 21 Oct at the age of 75 due to a heart condition.

Family had no other choice

“We have no other choice, grandma, I hope you understand,” wrote Ms Abante in a now-deleted Facebook post.

“Until your last goodbye, you were in pain,” she lamented, adding that it felt like a “double kill” for her grandma’s wake to be affected by the flood.

Ms Abante shared photos of the coffin resting on the ceiling beams, with her grandfather also positioned above, keeping watch.

She also posted images from earlier, showing the coffin when the floodwaters were still below waist-deep.

2 months’ worth of rainfall in 24 hours

During the onslaught of Typhoon Trami, around 30% of Naga City was flooded, impacting nearly 70% of its population, according to Mayor Nelson Lagacion.

As of 25 Oct, nine towns in Camarines Sur, where Naga City is located, remained submerged.

The Bicol region recorded most of the storm-related fatalities, including seven residents from Naga City.

Flash floods swept through the area after the typhoon dumped two months’ worth of rainfall in just 24 hours, coinciding with high tide and trapping thousands of residents.
