A man in Malaysia felt betrayed by his colleagues when they ordered Wagyu tomahawk steaks to celebrate his job promotion, resulting in a whopping RM3,000 (S$900) bill.
The man’s friend, Zainuddin Omar, took to Facebook to share about the incident that transpired last year.
According to Mr Zainuddin, his friend’s close colleagues “pestered” him to treat them to a meal at a restaurant.
He eventually gave in and brought six of them to a popular steakhouse.
To his surprise, four of his colleagues immediately looked for the most expensive dish on the menu, then “shamelessly” ordered RM600 (S$182) Wagyu tomahawk steaks.
Meanwhile, the other two were embarrassed and chose steaks worth RM60 (S$18).
In the end, the man footed the bill amounting to RM3,000 (S$910) when his budget for the meal was only RM200 (S$60) to RM300 (S$91).
According to Mr Zainuddin, the incident left his friend feeling betrayed.
According to the OP, his friend complained about how his colleagues were able to do such a thing just because he was promoted first.
He added that his friend thinks that spending RM3,000 on food is a “big waste”.
Mr Zainuddin also shared his own experience of treating a friend to a meal.
They were dining at a nasi kandar restaurant when his friend ordered “the biggest” shrimp and a large squid while he only ordered chicken curry.
Understandably, he was stunned when he ended up paying for their food.
“It’s not about being stingy, but there’s a line between treating yourself and straight-up exploiting someone’s kindness,” explained Mr Zainuddin.
He reminded his audience on Facebook about the proper etiquette when being treated to a meal.
“Have some class. Don’t take advantage of a friend’s generosity… Be considerate when ordering, especially if someone else is paying. A free meal isn’t a free-for-all.”
Many netizens agreed that the man’s colleagues were shameless for ordering the most expensive dish at the restaurant.
They said that the proper etiquette when being treated to a meal is to order a cheaper meal than what the person paying is getting himself, or to just let him order for everyone.
Some also shared their own experiences with opportunist friends.
One commenter shared that his friends ordered two dishes and sides each, and even asked people who were not invited to join, leaving him regretting the experience.
Another netizen shared that one can avoid treating colleagues to a meal by having their wife call and make up an excuse for them to leave.
