A female motorist in Penang, Malaysia died after a container fell from a trailer lorry and crushed her car on Wednesday (13 Nov) morning.
21-year-old Lee Zi Rou was waiting at a traffic light when the trailer from the opposite direction made a sharp turn.
The container on the trailer subsequently detached and fell on Ms Lee’s car.
The 21-year-old was reportedly driving alone to work when the tragedy occurred.
Another driver also sustained injuries and was conveyed to the hospital.
Following the accident, the 51-year-old trailer driver was arrested. He faces the charge of dangerous driving causing death.
After Ms Lee’s death, her sister took to Xiaohongshu, expressing her outrage and calling for the driver to be severely punished.
She condemned the trailer driver and questioned why he was driving so quickly on the day.
“Yesterday morning, when I heard the news, I was devastated. I rushed to the scene and saw my sister still inside the vehicle, with the container crushing against the driver’s seat,” she wrote in her post.
She also mentioned that it took a long time before a crane arrived to move the container.
On Thursday (14 Nov) morning, the trailer driver was escorted by police to Bukit Mertajam Court for an extension of his detention.
When walking past members of the press, he kept his head down to avoid cameras but raised a “V” sign twice for photographers.
The court allowed the police to detain the suspect for an additional four days to assist with further investigations.
