Couple ran a red light while escaping police during lockdown

Malaysia is currently under a Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb the spread of the pandemic.

According to Malaysia news site The Star, the 25-year-old man and 19-year-old woman beat a red light at a junction in Melaka while on a forbidden car date on Sunday (12 Apr).

Their bold move attracted the attention of patrolling police officers, who promptly alerted them to pull over.

Despite getting caught, the pair picked up speed and decided to make a run for it instead.

Ran out of fuel during car chase

A scene from a “Fast & Furious” movie quickly unfolded as the police relentlessly pursued the couple, as observed in this Facebook video posted on Tuesday (14 Apr):

The high-speed chase lasted 15km, from Rembia town all the way to Taman Angkasa Nuri, reported The Star.

However, the odds were not in their favour and the couple’s getaway car eventually ran out of fuel.

They were then swiftly apprehended by the authorities for their defiant behaviour.

Let’s be cooperative

Certainly, most of us do not have such ambitious and dramatic ‘Circuit Breaker’ dating plans. But even so, we should still try to abide by the ‘no gathering’ rule.

In PM Lee’s words, “it is in our nature to want to socialise, to be close to those we are talking to, to take comfort in the warmth and company of friends and family”.

In this critical period, however, we need to be socially responsible and minimise contact with each other, even with our partners.

It is ultimately a short term sacrifice, but a long term gain.
