Woman spotted cycling on KPE tunnel shoulder in wee hours, leaves netizens baffled

A woman was recently caught on camera cycling inside the Kallang–Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) tunnel in the dead of night — an area strictly off-limits to bicycles.

The eerie footage, allegedly filmed at 3.15am, quickly went viral and left many Singaporeans both baffled and spooked.

The now-viral video was first shared by Singapore roads accident.com新加坡公路意外网页 on Facebook on 23 June.

Captioned simply “Woman Cycling on KPE tunnel”, the clip shows a lone woman cycling steadily along the shoulder of the expressway tunnel, a dangerous and illegal stretch for bicycles.

Dressed in a beige top and white skirt, the woman appears to be riding an Anywheel bike, a bike-sharing service typically used for short urban commutes, not high-speed expressways.

Though the date of the footage wasn’t specified, the in-video caption says: “KPE tunnel 3:15am.”

The video sparked a flurry of reactions, with some netizens joking that the footage looked like something out of a horror movie.

One netizen expressed disbelief that someone could be cycling at that ungodly hour, prompting the question everyone was thinking: was this a ghost?

One Facebook user jokingly quipped that they “didn’t see anyone”, only an empty tunnel.

Others speculated more grounded theories — perhaps her car broke down and she had no other way home, forcing her to cycle back.

An eagle-eyed netizen also theorised that another cyclist might have taken the video because a blinking lamp could be seen at the beginning of the video.

Some viewers were also quick to point out a similar incident from June 2023, when two cyclists entered the KPE tunnel and sparked safety concerns.

Authorities prohibit cycling on expressways

Authorities have repeatedly warned that cycling on expressways and tunnels like the KPE is strictly prohibited for safety reasons, as vehicles travel at significantly higher speeds.

Cycling in these areas can incur hefty penalties. The offence carries a fine not exceeding $2,000, or an imprisonment term of up to six months.

Cyclists are advised to check GPS or map app settings to avoid being routed onto expressways by mistake.
