A single dad in Thailand died in a traffic accident while he was on his way to surprise his 4-year-old son.
The accident occurred earlier this week while he was on his way to see his son at the hospital. His motorcycle collided with a ten-wheeler that was reversing on the narrow road just a kilometre away from his destination.
After the fatal collision, EMTs arrived on the scene to discover that the man had prepared a gift for his son. It was a toy construction truck, tucked neatly in his backpack.
A relative, who was helping the man raise his son, wailed in sorrow when she came to identify the body on the road.
But still wanting to make the son’s birthday special, the EMTs and the relative bought a cake and held a special birthday celebration for the boy.
According to Thairath, the boy celebrated his birthday and received his late father’s present all without knowing that his dad had just died.
The relative was the father’s aunt. In an interview with Thairath, she said the man was a single dad.
He had gotten married to a woman from a nearby village, but they separated just a month after they had a child. The woman left the child to him.
Feeling lost and unsure how to care for the young child, the man begged his 52-year-old aunt for help. He told her that he wasn’t sure he could raise the boy properly and wanted help.
He said he’d work hard to provide for the boy. The aunt even added that the pair had been visiting the boy in shifts to make sure he was never alone at the hospital.
The man had applied for leave just to visit his son that day, before the fatal accident.
She said they still didn’t know how to tell the boy the bad news.
