‘Ask for a lot but pay peanuts’: S’pore job listing sparks outrage with S$2.98K offer for designer-admin role

Job listing in Singapore offers S$2,980 for degree-level designer & admin role

A recent job listing on MyCareersFuture for a ‘Graphic Design & Admin’ position has sparked outrage among netizens due to its low salary offer, especially given the high qualifications and experience requirements.

The vacancy offers a salary of S$2,980 while expecting applicants to commit to a five-day work week.

The listing, which was also shared on the r/Singapore subreddit, has ignited discussions about the seemingly unrealistic expectations set by the employer.

As the Reddit user who posted it wrote: “Company wants it all, but won’t pay for it.”

Responsibilities include collaborating with stakeholders & PR duties

According to the job listing, applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree and have at least six months of experience in graphic design and communications.

They must be prepared to manage communications-related tasks alongside their design responsibilities.

Key duties include developing and executing plans in collaboration with stakeholders, as well as creating cross-agency communication materials such as media releases and briefings — tasks typically associated with public relations strategists.

Moreover, candidates are required to be familiar with design platforms such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Redditors divided on whether salary advertised is fair for role

Many Redditors took to the comments section to share their opinions on the matter.

While there is a general consensus that the salary does not align with the expected responsibilities, some believe the figure reflects the current market rate for graphic designers in Singapore.

According to Glassdoor, the average monthly salary for a graphic designer is approximately S$3,250, although it remains unclear whether this figure varies for recent graduates.

Additionally, since the company expects the successful applicant to handle administrative duties, a higher compensation is typically warranted.

Numerous Redditors agree that the company should not expect a high standard of work from applicants given the low salary offered.
