It’s hard not to love xiao long baos — the meaty filling paired with luscious broth that erupts from the little wrapped-up dough when you puncture it with your chopsticks.
Restaurants in Singapore have taken the cue from fans, coming up with variations of the well-loved dish. These include xiao long baos with fillings like salted egg, chendol and even ginseng to zhng up their selection.
Din Tai Fung Australia takes it up a notch by introducing colours – literally – into their xiao long baos.
Behold, Din Tai Fung’s Giant Rainbow Dumpling.
The Giant Rainbow Dumpling is a basically an enlarged xiao long bao, hiding seafood and pork filling under its multi-coloured skin.
Each of them goes for S$9.30 (AUD$9.80). A small price to pay this one-of-a-kind rainbow beauty.
Taking up an entire bamboo basket, or long zi, these dumplings are about 7 times the size of the original xiao long bao.
As if this wasn’t bao enough already, the dumpling also comes with a straw and a cute bao-shaped note warning of the piping-hot broth.
Curious how these dumplings are made? The folks at Din Tai Fung Australia has also very kindly made a video showing the process, which you can view here.
Basically, they mix up dough of different colours, fill it with a generous serving of meat filling and soup, and steam it in the long zi.
Unfortunately for Singaporeans, these rainbow xiao long baos are only available in Din Tai Fung outlets in Sydney and Melbourne.
If you’re desperate enough to get a taste of these rainbow-coloured delicacies, you’d best plan your trip to Australia soon as they are reportedly only available till Saturday (15 Jun).
