A dog in Thailand pooped itself and died after getting shocked by loud fireworks launched during a recent festival.
On Thursday (14 Nov), the distraught owner took to Facebook to vent his frustration after losing his seven-month-old puppy.
Last night (15 Nov) was Loy Krathong, a festival celebrating the full moon in the 12th lunar month. In Chiang Mai, where the man lives, the festival is celebrated over three days — from 14-17 Nov this year.
For one family, however, it was anything but a celebration.
On 13 Nov, a Thai man living in Chiang Mai penned a post in anger after someone lit a firework and threw it in front of his house. “I don’t mind if you light fireworks, but why are you tossing it in front of my house?” the post said.
Sadly, it only got worse from there. The following day, the man claimed his seven-month-old puppy, Yang Yang, died because it got shocked by the loud fireworks set off by locals to celebrate Loy Krathong.
The man, who is currently working abroad, lamented that it was only about 20 more days before he would return home to see his beloved dog.
Additionally, he would video call Yang Yang daily to greet her. His final call to her was that very morning when they lovingly greeted each other.
Using his experience as a cautionary tale, the man urged pet owners to take extra care of their pets during the holidays. “If no one else is home, stay with your pets during the holidays so they don’t get spooked,” he warned.
According to Khaosod, Yang Yang was being taken care of by the man’s sister and mother. On the night of the incident, the pair left home to attend a birthday party.
They returned about 2 hours later to find Yang Yang lying on the floor next to a pile of faeces. The sister rushed to provide CPR and quickly transported Yang Yang to the vet.
At the hospital, the vet was unable to detect a pulse. They also tried administering defibrillation, but it was too late.
After returning home, the family checked the home’s security cameras to see what had happened to Yang Yang.
In the footage, the family heard the sound of a firework. It was described as being incredibly loud as if an explosive had gone off nearby. Following the loud bang, Yang Yang could be heard howling twice before it went completely silent.
According to CBS, loud fireworks can cause anxiety in pets, due to their heightened sense of hearing.
Vets advise owners to not leave their pets alone during festivals where fireworks are expected. Treats can also be used to help calm the pets down if they begin to get anxious, they added.
