Four years after its introduction, another component of the renowned East Coast Plan — a special package for residents under the East Coast Green Savers programme.
The initiative was launched on Saturday (7 Dec) by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Maliki Osman, who also serves as a Member of Parliament (MP) for East Coast GRC.
In a Facebook post on Sunday (8 Dec), Dr Maliki shared that East Coast households with citizens and permanent residents will receive a “starter pack” as part of the programme.
This will consist of a lunchbox, tumbler, cutlery set, and a hand-woven bag.
Residents can use items from the pack to redeem discounts or extra food at participating vendors, he added.
The promotions will be valid at about 70 vendors across East Coast GRC, identifiable by an East Coast Green Savers poster at their stalls.
A list of participating vendors can be found on the People’s Association’s East Coast microsite.
The East Coast Green Savers initiative encourages everyone to reduce waste and use fewer disposables, Dr Maliki said.
For example, he told The Straits Times (ST) that the lunchbox would remind residents not to waste food by saving their leftover food or putting aside half the food portions when eating out.
This supports the Green Pillar of the East Coast Plan, which aims to leave the earth in a good place for future generations.
The savings on food costs also help residents cope with the rising cost of living, he added.
This is aligned with the Caring Pillar of the East Coast Plan, which aims to help every walk of life and give back to the community.
According to The Straits Times, the programme will initially be rolled out in the Siglap ward, benefiting about 3,000 households. If successful, it will be extended to other neighbourhoods in East Coast GRC, the minister said.
