A minimart employee in Indonesia died after getting his head trapped and crushed by a lift.
The tragic accident was captured by a CCTV camera on Saturday (16 Nov) afternoon when the 29-year-old employee, Mr Abizah (name transliterated), was monitoring the loading and unloading of goods via the lift.
Initially, Mr Abizah, who was operating the lift on the minimart’s third floor, wanted to move goods from the first floor to the third floor.
As he leaned his head into the shaft, his left hand, which was resting near the door, accidentally pressed the lift switch without him realising it.
This caused the lift to descend and crush his head and neck, reports Sin Chew Daily News.
He was stuck for less than a minute before his colleagues, who heard his screams of pain, rushed over and pressed the emergency stop button in an attempt to rescue him.
Mr Abizah was sent to the nearest hospital; unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
Local police confirmed with Indonesian news outlet detikNews that the incident was caused by human error, specifically Mr Abizah’s negligence.
“The victim was unaware that his hand had touched the lift button, causing the slow-moving lift to trap his neck and head,” the police commissioner explained.
He said his colleagues had rescued him and transported him to a hospital, but due to the severe injuries he sustained on his head and neck, his life could not be saved.
His body was returned to his family, who have since arranged for his funeral.
