FairPrice To Extend “No Plastic Bag” Drive To 25 Outlets

On 16 Sep, FairPrice trialed a “No Plastic Bag” drive in 7 of their outlets. The trial lasted for a month and ended on 16 Oct.

Under the drive, shoppers would have to pay 10-20 cents for plastic bags. This sought to encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable bags to the supermarket.

Today (4 Nov), FairPrice announced that they will be extending the “No Plastic Bag” drive to 25 outlets around Singapore. This time, the drive will last for an entire year, starting 11 Nov.

If you have extra reusable bags lying at home, it’s probably a good time to whip them out.

Shoppers to pay 10-20 cents for plastic bags

From 11 Nov, shoppers who require plastic bags at FairPrice outlets can purchase them at 20 cents per transaction.

For shoppers visiting Cheers and FairPrice Xpress stores, they will only need to pay 10 cents per transaction for plastic bags.

The 25 outlets affected by the drive are:

• 12 FairPrice supermarkets
• 5 Cheers stores
• 8 FairPrice Xpress stores

The press release by FairPrice shared that all “proceeds from the charge will go towards the sponsorship of environmental and community causes”.

$19,000 donations collected from “No Plastic Bag” trial

According to the press release, the “No Plastic Bag” trial ended with a total of $19,000 collected from plastic bag charges.

All proceeds were donated to the Singapore Children’s Society and The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.
