A video of a father slapping his young daughter at a Taekwondo match has gone viral earlier this week.
The 8-year-old girl was representing Kosovo at the European Children’s Taekwondo Championship in Tirana, Albania on 10 Nov.
She had just lost the final match against her rival from Serbia at the time.
In the clip, the girl appeared distraught over the loss, covering her face with her hands as she walked over to her father — who is also her coach.
As she approached him, he stood up and grabbed her by her protective gear.
He then removed her helmet, and pulled her up by the collar before slapping her. The young girl’s face swiveled from the impact.
He was later seen helping the girl take off the rest of her protective gear.
One of the officials who observed the incident had walked over to intervene. Afer which, an official escorted the girl out of the premises.
The European Taekwondo Union has reportedly suspended the father from all Taekwondo activities for six months, calling his actions “physically aggressive”.
Speaking to local media, the father defended himself, saying that he only slapped his daughter to calm her down.
“I simply wanted to let her know that despite the loss, she is still the runner-up and that there will be other chances,” he said.
