Singapore Factory Employee Crossed Causeway Daily To Make A Living

A China Press report published on Sunday (24 Feb) shared the tragic story of how a 31-year-old Singapore factory employee allegedly died due to cardiomyopathy — the disease of a heart muscle.

Mr Cai endured long daily commutes across the Johor Causeway to Singapore everyday, in order to make a living to support his family, reports the Johor-based paper.

A filial son’s long work commute

Mr Cai’s father shared with China Press that his son had reportedly fainted on the doorstep as he was heading out of his rented house located in Skudai, Johor Bahru.

In his own words,

My son travels back and forth from Malaysia to Singapore everyday. Yesterday, he was getting ready to go out since it was a weekend but upon stepping out of the door, his whole body fell.

He received news about his son’s admission to Johor Bahru General Hospital on Saturday (23 Feb). The elderly Mr Cai immediately rushed to the hospital, but did not expect to receive the news of his son’s death.

Concerned father asked son to resign

He recalls that his son repeatedly complained about being very tired. Concerned, he shared that he had advised his son to resign and return to Malaysia to make a living.

Mr Cai allegedly worked as a technician in a glass factory in Singapore for 9 years, and would take a bus to work everyday.

China Press reports that he was paid S$1,000 per month (RM3,017) and that Mr Cai was a filial son who visited his father, every few months.

Symptoms of cardiomyopathy

The hospital later confirmed that the official cause of death was a heart disease called cardiomyopathy.

Its symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, chest discomfort, coughing and light-headedness. In light of Mr Cai’s unfortunate passing, this is a timely reminder for all of us to prioritise our health.
